The story behind the Sonas Collection

Where it All Began

Our collection is owned, managed and loved by a family born and brought up on the island. The journey has been a long one - a bit like the journey to our hotels. But in exactly the same way, it's been well worth it. We've created four unique experiences cherished by many people.

"The whole ethos of our family business is to provide genuine Highland hospitality delivered with passion from the heart at every level, showcasing the best angles of our Island home."

Anne Gracie Gunn

Inspired by a love of the sea and island life, the Sonas Collection's story began back in 2003, with the intimate Skye gem, Toravaig. What owners, Ken Gunn and Anne Gracie Gunn saw as the 'ship ashore' soon became a companion to the  new adventures being offered on their yacht "Solus" - which fitted in the collection perfectly because of Toravaig's nautical nods.

For eleven years, experienced Sea Captain, Ken and coastal skipper, Anne combined their love for hospitality and sailing by hosting sailing excursions and weddings aboard through the Sound of Sleat to the Small Isles and St Kilda.

As demand grew, the next addition to the Sonas Collection was in 2007. Duisdale is just three miles from Toravaig, and after renovating this Victorian mansion, it soon became the much-loved characterful house you see today.

Eight years later, the collection expanded with the addition of the iconic Skeabost, just north of Portree. And at this time, Anne’s daughter, Jen and her family joined the business.

The latest addition in 2023 further down the coast from our Skye homes, situated on the outskirts of the charming town of Oban is the delightful Knipoch House Hotel.

Gaelic is the native language of Skye and Sonas is the Gaelic for Happiness.

The most important thing to us is that each guest will find their own happiness on their stay with us. Although our hotels are all unique and special in their own way, the overall ethos is the same: providing great service and sharing our unique culture, history, and natural environment.
