The Tallsker Distillery is the only distillery on The Isle of Skye, set on the shores of Loch Harport in the north of the island it has dramatic views of the Cuillin Hills. Talisker Whisky is an alluring, sweet, full-bodied single malt. It is so easy to enjoy, and like Skye itself, so hard to leave.
The distillery is operated by United Distillers and Vintners for Diageo, and is marketed as part of their Classic Malts series. Founded in 1830 by Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill and the distillery now operates five stills, two wash stills and three spirit stills. The malted barley used in production comes from Muir of Ord. Talisker and the annual output is approximately three and a half million litres of whisky and there is a Visitor Centre which is open to the public.
Toravaig Hotel is about 45-60 minutes away by car and is ideal base to enjoy a whisky break in Skye. Make sure you have a designated driver!
Talisker was the favourite whisky of writers Robert Louis Stevenson and Henry Vollam Morton. In his poem, The Scotsman's Return From Abroad, Stevenson mentioned "The king o' drinks, as I conceive it, Talisker, Isla, or Glenlivet."
